ClickUp alternative with less to configure
ClickUp is a wide-scope work management platform, with a large range of views and a great deal of customisation across docs, tasks and dashboards. It is designed to cover many kinds of work in one place, and for teams that want that breadth it does it well.
Otper is deliberately narrow. It does delivery on a board: stages, owners, limits and reporting. Teams shopping for a ClickUp alternative usually are not missing a feature — they are trying to shorten the distance between opening the tool and knowing where the work is.
Published plans
| Plan | Free | First paid tier |
|---|---|---|
| Otper | $0 — up to 3 teammates, unlimited projects, core reporting | Pro $12/user/month |
| ClickUp | Unlimited members, with limits on spaces, lists and folders | Unlimited $10/user/month, or $7 billed annually |
ClickUp figures read from their pricing page on 16 September 2026; Otper figures from our own pricing page. Plans change, so check both before deciding.
The free tiers differ in shape rather than size: ClickUp’s allows more members with limits on how the workspace is structured, Otper’s allows three teammates with unlimited projects and core reporting included.
What Otper does differently
There is no dashboard to build. This is the main practical difference. Otper computes throughput, the median days cards take end to end, the average days work waits in each list ranked and scored, untouched cards past seven days, and workload against the team average — from activity your team already produces. Set a date range, scope it to boards, read it, export it to CSV or PDF. A report you would otherwise have to design is simply already there.
Work-in-progress limits that block. Each list takes a soft limit that warns in amber and a hard limit that refuses the card and turns the column red, including cards pushed in by an automation. Both start off.
Fewer decisions to make. There is one board shape, one set of views — Board, List, Gantt and Tickets over the same cards — and a small field set. That is a genuine limitation if you want to model something unusual, and the reason setup is short if you do not.
Ownership that stays attributable. Assignees come from board members and each card keeps a contributor history of who held it and when they passed it on.
Where ClickUp is the better choice
If the appeal is breadth, stay with it. ClickUp is the better fit when you want docs, whiteboards, time tracking, goals and custom dashboards in a single workspace, or when different teams each need the tool bent into a different shape. Otper does not do those things, and a narrower tool would mean running a second one alongside it.
It is also the better choice when you have someone who enjoys configuring the workspace and the team benefits from it. That skill is worth more than a shorter setup.
Otper suits teams who would rather not have that job at all. Simple project management software covers where that trade-off stops being worth it.
Moving your work across
There is no importer, so a move is a deliberate re-entry rather than a one-click transfer. That is slower, but it is also the moment to drop the work nobody was ever going to finish.
- Create one board per active project.
- Name your lists after the stages work actually passes through, not after the teams that own them.
- Invite the people who need access. Card assignees are drawn from board members, so add the team before you start assigning.
- Re-create only work that is still open. Leave finished items in ClickUp as the archive; there is no need to migrate history.
- Once you can see real volume in each list, set a work-in-progress limit on the columns that collect work.
If there is too much open work to retype, boards, lists and cards are all writable through the GraphQL API on every plan, so a short script can create them in bulk. The API reference has the schema and an interactive playground.
Frequently asked questions
What makes Otper a simpler ClickUp alternative?
There is one board shape, one set of views and a small field set, so there is little to decide before the first card. That is a real limitation if you want to model something unusual, and the reason setup is short if you do not.
Do I have to build dashboards to get reporting?
No. Throughput, median days to finish a card, average days per stage ranked and scored, untouched cards past seven days and workload against the team average are all computed from board activity. Pick a date range, scope it to boards, export to CSV or PDF.
Does Otper have docs, whiteboards or time tracking?
No. Otper does not include documents, whiteboards, time tracking or goals. If you want those in the same workspace, ClickUp covers considerably more ground and moving would mean running a second tool alongside it.
When should I stay with ClickUp?
Stay if the appeal is breadth, if different teams each need the tool shaped differently, or if you have someone who enjoys configuring the workspace and the team benefits from it. That skill is worth more than a shorter setup.
Try it on one project
Pick a single active project rather than migrating everything at once. Create an Otper account, run that project for a fortnight, and check the current plans and limits before inviting the rest of the team.
